Although smoking is increasingly frowned upon nowadays, the hookah or shisha occupies some sort of no-mans land between authorities and non-smokers on one side, and the smoking crowd on the other. On account of its cultural aspects every now and then some local or regional government permits smoking shisha in dedicated hookah bars, and with an increasing regularity non-smokers try a shisha pipe with tobacco-free herbal molasses, and next thing they do is go out and buy their own hookah!

 

On eBay the auctioning of "real" tobacco is prohibited, but fortunately tobacco-free molasses are offered in abundance! There really is not a trace of tobacco to be found in these molasses, of course no trace of nicotine either. One smokes the tobacco-free herbal molasses purely for the taste, not for any real or imagined "kick". Although I prefer the traditional shisha tobacco (less for the nicotine than for the fact that it's available just 10 minutes from my home), I certainly like the non-tobacco herbal molasses too. In fact there's so little nicotine in normal shisha tobacco that its kick is largely imagined anyway, and the tobacco free herbal shisha molasses are just as tasty as their tobacco containing counterparts. I freely admit that, even as an experienced "hooker", I can fairly easily be fooled when it comes to distinguishing the two...

 

Fairly often the question crops up: "What are the dangers of hookah smoking?" Nobody knows for sure, but that smoking hookah tobacco isn't as healthy as inhaling fresh air in the forest after a pleasant spring rain, should be clear. Personally I don't care - I probably get more rubbish into my lungs during one hour of traffic, than from a whole day of enthousiastic hookah smoking. But again: be aware that you do inhale "foreign gasses" when enjoying your shisha pipe! Denying the dangers of hookah smoking would be misleading.
